- since 1997: Full professor at the University of Hanover, head of the Real Time Systems Group, executive director of the Center for Technical Didactics
- Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (since April 2009)

- Head of research initiative Future Internet at LUH
- Member of the Center for Mechatronics at the Leibniz Universitaet Hannover
- Founding member of the Competence Circle Embedded Networking Lower Saxony (KENN e.V.)

- 1991 - 1997: Professor of Computer Science at the University of Applied Sciences in Ulm; research and industrial projects in the fields of programming and software engineering especially for embedded systems
- 1988 - 1991: Head of the Software Reverse Engineering Group of GPP in Oberhaching/Munich
- 1985 - 1988: Research assistant at the Institute for Automation and Software Technology at the University of Stuttgart, finished Ph.D. in 1989
- 1978 - 1984: University of Stuttgart; received his degree in Electrical Engineering in 1984
